A federal jury in Fort Worth on Thursday found a former Los Angeles Angels communications director guilty of giving a fatal dose of fentanyl-laced painkillers...
Jurors convicted Eric Prescott Kay on drug charges after a weeklong trial that centered on the dangers of fentanyl, which is often found in counterfeit prescription pills.
The verdict comes two days after federal prosecutors rested their case following dramatic testimony from four former Angels players. Kay, 47, was convicted of distributing a controlled substance resulting in death and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances. He faces 20 years to life in prison when he is sentenced by Senior Judge Terry Means on June 28.
Pitchers Matt Harvey, Cam Bedrosian and Mike Morin all testified for the government, along with infielder C.J. Cron. They said they took the 30 milligram oxycodone pills that they got from Kay to help with injuries and recovery from surgeries. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office determined that Skaggs had a toxic mixture of alcohol, oxycodone and fentanyl in his system and choked on his own vomit. If not for the fentanyl, he would not have died, authorities said.
The oxycodone pills, known as “blues” for their color, were dropped off in players’ lockers and in their hotel rooms, according to the players’ testimony. On the witness stand, they talked about their use of the drug to ease the constant pain, even in the dugout.
