Eric Gaines scored a career-high 19 points in UAB's 84-70 win over South Carolina, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. Leading by a single possession after going up 10-0 to open the game, Jordan “Jelly” Walker drove the inside lane to the paint before coming up against a wall of defenders. Casually taking in all of his options, the nation’s leading scorer deflected to KJ Buffen, who stood alone at the top of the key.
The Blazers shot 44.8 percent overall, 40 percent from 3-point range and was 16-of-17 at the charity stripe. Defensively, UAB allowed the Gamecocks to shoot 42.6 percent overall but forced 14 turnovers that resulted in 14 points, along with owning the paint with a plus-9 edge in rebounding and plus-14 edge on inside scoring.
South Carolina cut the UAB advantage down to two points on consecutive 3-pointers from Chico Carter Jr., but the Blazers closed out the opening frame on a 20-8 run to hold a 14-point lead heading into the break.
