Help your fledgling adult foster a lifetime appreciation for food prep with a smart selection of utensils and equipment
Multicultural, traditional holiday dishes take on extra meaning as nonprofit’s apprentices work toward a new start in life“For other items, we go to the amazing little shop called Kitchens for Good in Pacific Beach. They sell gently loved, secondhand kitchen equipment. We bought her an excellent chef’s knife for pennies on the dollar and were able to buy her some of her ‘wants’ there. We also found some amazing cookbooks to get her started and, on the way out, found a salad spinner.
Take a look around your own kitchen. What are the basics? If you’re going to cook, you’ll need to prep the food. Then you’ll need to cook it in something, stir it, lift it, rinse it. If your kid likes to bake, there are some fundamental items they’ll need for that. Then there are all the small appliances. And how do you serve it and eat it?
If your fledgling is an avid cook, you’ll want pots and pans of different sizes. Even if yours only plans on making pasta or scrambled eggs, they’ll still need a stock pot and a couple of skillets. A great choice in skillets is an 8- or 10-inch cast-iron skillet. A well-seasoned cast-iron skillet is an inexpensive choice that can last a lifetime.
They may need a toaster or toaster oven, a small blender for making smoothies, an immersion blender for pureeing soups if they’re into cooking, likewise a crockpot and a hand mixer, unless you’re going to splurge on a stand mixer. Silicone spatulas and a wooden spoon or two will protect nonstick cookware, and a whisk, tongs and potato masher will get frequent use in the kitchen.
