Kingwood baseball's Kelly Mead hit a huge milestone earlier this season with the 400th win of his 16-year coaching career.“I couldn’t have gotten 400 wins if it wasn’t for really good players and a lot of good parents,” said Mead, who reached win No. 400 after the Mustangs defeated Cypress Creek 3-2 in the Humble ISD baseball tournament. “We’re in a really good community, and we get support from our administration, from our teachers and a lot of other people.
Some of those players — members of the 2005 state champion team he helped guide as an assistant coach, as well as other alumni — filled the stands the next day while the Mustangs played Lake Creek. “I got so many text messages, emails, Facebook posts from former players and a whole lot of other people, too,” Mead said. “There’s nothing like seeing your former players coming to the ballpark and celebrating an accomplishment. Each one of them had a hand in getting a win in my career.
“I tell everyone when I was an assistant coach it was 90 percent baseball, 10 percent other things,” he continued. “Now it’s flipped, and it’s more about being there for these kids. It’s all about molding the kids into good young men. It’s very rewarding to see when guys come back and they’re at their next phase of life.”
