The Lady Mustangs defeated rival Atascocita 1-0 in a Region III-6A regional quarterfinal game Friday night at Turner Stadium.The Lady Mustangs got their revenge ending the Lady Eagles’ season this time. “That’s what our girls came into the game talking about,” Kingwood coach Pres Holcomb said. “It’s good bulletin board material. They’re a great team and we beat them during the season, but we know every time we play them, we know it’s going to be a battle. I told them that this was it, you move on, or you go home in the playoffs. They were hyped for this game.”
Kingwood will play Stratford in a Region III-6A semifinal game at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Abshier Stadium.Atascocita ends the season 12-11-4 under first-year coach Timothy Franciskovich.There was uncertainty with Atascocita having to replace 22 players from last year’s team. “Coming into the year there was a lot of self-doubt from everyone,” Franciskovich said. “As players and coaches, we didn’t know what this season was going to look like. I told them at this point they have overachieved anyone’s expectations. Losing 22 players and having four or five returning starters isn’t easy to do but these girls found a way to make it here. We just came up short today.”The Lady Mustangs won all three games and outscored the Lady Eagles 7-0 in the series.
