At 4-years-old, doctors decided that Alex required more immersive testing for her epilepsy. This meant a week-long hospital stay, a proposition any kid or adult would baulk at. But Alex had her trusty pal, Sky Bear, who made her stay more peaceful. Alex noted that other kids in care were there without a “fluffy buddy” to nuzzle. This would not do.

That group includes me. “Do you want some ice cream?” she asked, while in line with her relatives at Graeter’s at Crocker Park in Westlake. “They have pumpkin!” Three short years later, Alex was up to monthly runs to Ronald McDonald House, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and other area hospitals — with the help of her parents Melisa and James, and, more recently, her “fluffy therapy dog buddy” named Dude.
