Kimble Park in South Dallas was named Irene H. Trigg-Myers Prosperity Park to honor late community and housing advocate and Abounding Prosperity Inc. co-founder Irene H. Trigg-Myers.
DALLAS — Community leaders and residents gathered for the renaming of the South Dallas facility formerly known as Kimble Park earlier this month. Now, the newly named Irene H. Trigg-Myers Prosperity Park honors late community and housing advocate and Abounding Prosperity Inc. co-founder Irene H. Trigg-Myers.
Daniel Wood, Vice President of Dallas Parks and Recreation Board of Trustees, considered Kimble Park historically underserved. However, the Irene H. Trigg-Myers Prosperity Park will receive a facelift with the help of TBG Partners, a Dallas-based architectural firm — pro bono — in the upcoming year. On what would’ve been her 80th birthday, her son announced new proposals for the design of the park, which include walking trails, a dog park, a boardwalk overlook and a garden.
As a “tireless advocate” for affordable housing, Irene H. Trigg-Myers insisted it afforded people a “leg-up” and not a “handout.” She considered it a stepping stone for those who truly needed it and encouraged them to aspire for more whenever they could. “For me, this is about family,” Myers said. “And a lot of people were talking about ‘well, again, we don’t need a gay park.’ This is not gay. I don’t have a gay agenda. There is not a Black gay agenda here in Dallas. There is a Black family agenda. This is a Black family agenda. This is a Black family park and certainly this park is here to encourage health and wellness, which is part of our mission.
