Jake Parkinson, 22, and Jak Fairclough, 29, were convicted of killing a random stranger in a street
altercation that lasted just 20 seconds. The friends bumped into Jack Jermy-Doyle while on a night out at at 2.30am.
The court heard how Jack and his friend Robert Jones encountered the defendants on the corner of Harris Street and Birley Street in Preston in the early hours of August 12, 2022. They were in good spirits, after having some drinks and deciding to head into Preston to continue their night. Jack, who was just two weeks short of his 26th birthday, was then punched by Fairclough - falling to the ground and hitting his head on the pavement. As Jack lay, seriously injured and alone, both men ran off towards Church Street, shouting “Who wants it?”, the court heard.
Fairclough contacted the police to hand himself in and admitted to disposing of the clothes he was wearing that night in a neighbour's bin. “Going to jail me,” was one of Parkinson's messages, accompanied by a snoozing face emoji. "See you at HMP Wymott” Parkinson was arrested later that day while he was drinking at a club near his home in Lea, Preston. Detective Inspector Bryony Midgley, who was the senior investigating officer in the case, read out the details of an interview conducted with Parkinson on the Saturday, more than 24 hours after the assault.
"I didn’t want to hurt him. If I’d wanted to hurt him I’d have hit him in the face. The situation just didn’t need to happen. There was no point in it happening. It was over and done with in 20 seconds. I said to Jak ‘we need to go'."
