Stephen Owusu, 23, told police: 'He picked a fight and he lost'
A man brutally stabbed his housemate 34 times after he mistakenly thought he’d broken his plate. Stephen Owusu, 23, confronted 42-year-old Thomas Murphy, before going to the kitchen and picking up a 20-inch knife before plunging it into his body.
READ MORE: Emergency services swarm street with large cordon put in place due to 'concern for welfare' of man There was a call out to the police in June 2021, after Owusu had punched his mum and threatened to kill her whilst holding a knife. He later claimed to officers that she was ‘gaslighting him’ and ‘poisoning his food’.
Owusu, who slept in the downstairs bedroom, used a padlock and key to lock his door even at night if he went to the toilet, such was his paranoia, the court heard. This became a ‘source of dispute’ with Mr Murphy enquiring about the noise of the padlock, and complaining that he could hear the door unlocking and locking between seven and fifteen times a night.
At 4.47pm, Owusu confronted Mr Murphy about the plate, and later claimed to police that Mr Murphy had called him ‘stupid’ for thinking he deliberately broke the plate. A post mortem later revealed 34 stab wounds, 14 of which to his chest and abdomen, some which had penetrated various organs. He also had defence injuries where he had tried to block the knife, the court heard. His cause of death was recorded as multiple stab wounds.
Other family statements spoke of Mr Murphy as having a ‘great sense of humour’, with ‘energy that could power anyone’ and someone who could find ‘plenty of laughs’ in the most boring of places. Mitigating, Anesta Weekes KC said both of Owusu’s parents had raised concerns about their son, adding that it was ‘regrettable’ that it wasn’t picked up by mental health professionals.
