Kevin O’Leary has a definition of success you may not like, but his priorities are clear | Opinion
in which he shared his views on success, specifically highlighting how he values achievement over other priorities like family: “You may lose your wife, you may lose your dog, your mother may hate you. None of those things matter. What matters is that you achieve success and become free. Then you can do whatever you like.”
The top leaders we work with in our leadership development firm are challenged with defining what they want. Shockingly, greater than 50% are not able to answer the question, “What do you want?” Typically, they will answer with what they don’t want. What does O’Leary want? He wants to achieve success in order to have the freedom to do whatever he wants. Agree or disagree with his values or what he’s willing to sacrifice to achieve his goals, but don’t dismiss his method — be clear on what you want and have the leadership confidence to choose one priority over another to achieve it.
There’s a relatively easy solution leaders can follow: Identify what you want, then force-rank the related priorities to achieve it. This will give you the framework to allocate your finite time and resources toward those priorities.
