There is something about darts – its accessibility, its demotic nature, and its simple humanityThe World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace comes to an end on Tuesday night . I, however, find myself marking the passing of another year with the World Darts Championship., the world’s best darts player is crowned amid the cacophony of London’s Alexandra Palace.
I am moved by all sorts of sporting achievement, but there is something about darts, its accessibility, its demotic nature, and its simple humanity, that particularly touches me. There is a purity about it, too – no luck, no cheating and very little triumphalism – that gives it a very different flavour from most other pursuits. There is nothing hapahazard, no hard-luck stories, no blaming outside agencies.
The current championship, which concludes this evening, has, in regard to the sporting endeavour, been no different from any other. Darts remains a simple game which demands an extraordinary level of skill – a match is won by throwing a steel-tipped dart from a distance of 7ft 9.25in into an area which measures 0.773sq in – mathematical dexterity, tremendous nerve and an unflappable temperament.
But there is another dimension to the darts. As much as the players are centre stage, it’s the crowd, in all its boisterous, lager-fuelled, unruly din, that is integral to the appeal and character of this event, and, in small part, reflects the mood of the nation. Last year, they were singing “Stand up if you hate Boris”. It was quite shocking, the first palpable sign that
among a key demographic, and presaged what happened a few months later. This year, it was just drinking songs.
