Earlier this month, the clouds over Mount Guardian in upstate New York parted briefly over the space of a day and a night and gave onlookers a gorgeous glimpse of the sun and moon.
She was a bit of a mystery — a trained chef, teacher, editor and artist who traveled from a childhood on the beaches of San Diego to the mountains of the opposite side of the country, to inexplicably spend the last 29 years of her life as a monastery live-in volunteer. But her unexpected death last week at age 79 has me and all her other friends realizing just how amazing she was and how many lives she touched from a distant perch in a tiny room on an ancient mountain — and how the rest of us can learn from her careful and conscious life choices.
It takes time to train on this path, as we frequently bring our everyday life’s bad habits into our spiritual life. Walking that line gives us a chance to inhabit our strength and give back to others, which in some ways is what the spiritual life is all about. Her children and grandchildren, although distant, were continually part of her life, through letters and FaceTime calls. Grandchildren’s drawings and art projects dotted her office shelves. But she resisted hints that she should retire, preferring to stay with her husband and working at the monastery
