Indian lawyer Karuna Nundy warns patriarchy is 'coming back like a cancer and metastasizing in court judgements'
TIME is teaming up with ABC to bring viewers inside the exclusive TIME100 Gala for the first time with a special television event., featuring hostRead the full transcript of Nundy’s remarks at the TIME100 Gala:We see a version of this story everyday, patriarchy coming back like a cancer and metastasizing in court judgments, at work and in the very spirits and bodies of women and queer folk.
We got Maryam out and safe, through tunnels of legal procedure. She’s on the other side now, flourishing as a writer in Bollywood. There is so much an unbounded spirit can do, given half a chance–that’s what drives me in the fight to criminalize marital rape, to make laws more just towards women and queer folk. To enable joy and flourishing.
From clients who by any metric should be beaten down and wiped out, from Maryam, from the survivors of Bhopal’s gas disasters, from people being prosecuted for telling hard truths, from justice within the gates of power, I draw the strength to persist through slow, gnarly processes. Let’s raise a toast, then, to the spirit that blooms unerringly, relentlessly towards light. And the abundance and healing waiting to tumble, out of all our peoples, in every part of the world.
