FORT WORTH — Texas Southern played a fellow Texas college in Ohio for the opportunity to try and take down a national power in Cowtown.
TSU had a spirited albeit outnumbered following in Dickies Arena, and the Tigers trailed by seven at 19-12 midway through the first half. But Kansas’s overwhelming talent and fresher legs took over soon after, with TSU having played in the First Four two days prior, and the romp was on. Along the lines of doubling up, Kansas led TSU 62-31 about seven minutes into the second half before the Jayhawks eased off the gas pedal down the stretch. Forward John Walker III led TSU with 13 points. Five Kansas players scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack and at no point did the Tigers threaten the Jayhawks.
Baylor whipped Norfolk State 85-49 in the opening game in Dickies Arena. North Carolina hammered Marquette 95-63 in the following contest. Just prior to TSU-Kansas, Creighton edged San Diego State 72-69 in overtime in easily the closest contest in Fort Worth.
