This is a gorgeous swoon of a record from Colombian-American musician Kali Uchis. She’s had the kind of slow-burn career that is only just paying off after releasing her first music in 2012, singing in both Spanish and English . She leans hard into the feminine here, gentle melodies that trip up and down the octaves over smooth, sensual beats and harp strums. It’s a hypnotic haze, an album for lazing around in the sun.
The moon and Venus and their positions to each other are said to dictate love, sex and relationships – and there’s certainly a lot of romantic love and sexual suggestion on this record. “Como Te Quiero Yo” marries the two in a bilingual sex jam littered with erotic moans and a request “Can we make up?/ All night, all day”.
Uchis has spoken of her love for 60s soul and R&B and that’s certainly evident here, but there’s also an 80s feel in the sparkling synths and glittering, lovelorn melodies. Sure, the lyrics are occasionally a bit hokey but they feel bedded in with real feelings.Songs to stream: Not Too Late, Endlessly, Fantasy
