Jurors recommended that Armond Johnson Sr., 29, die in prison rather than a death chamber for the murders of Takeyra Collins, 6-year-old Armond Johnson Jr., 2-year-old Aubree Stone and David Cousin on July 8, 2019.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McCormick will impose sentencing at a later date. McCormick has the ability to reduce the jury’s recommendation to a life sentence with a chance at parole after 25 or 30 years. He cannot impose a death sentence.Defense attorneys Tom Shaughnessy and Jim McDonnell declined to comment after the recommendation was read.
Johnson’s mother failed to address her son’s medical, mental and educational needs as a child. He also had a 75 IQ and the ability to read at a fourth-grade level. Johnson lived in a home without running water for long periods of time, experts testified. Johnson shot and killed Collins inside the bedroom of her Slavic Village home, then set fire to the house that caused the children to choke to death on its smoke. Johnson then shot Cousin, who lived next door and came home while Johnson was standing outside the home he set on fire.
He drove back to Collins’ house and used her phone to send text messages blaming the deaths on another man. Then he poured gasoline in several spots throughout the house and lit it on fire. The house did not burst into flames because its double-pane windows did not break, preventing air from entering the home and fueling the blaze.
