In my lifetime, I have witnessed racism in its many forms, from organized and overt discrimination to the covert, often unconscious or denied prejudice that Black men and women face every day. I have witnessed the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and, names we recognize for their indelible contributions in the fight for justice.
The National Archives holds thousands more original documents that pledge the promise of equality for all — including the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments following the Civil War, as well as the 19th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These documents represent the sacrifices of generations and the winding road of progress they forged.Frederick Douglass realized that a more perfect union begins with a promise, often stated in our most treasured documents.
So this July Fourth, along with 330 million of my fellow citizens, I will celebrate the promise of America. I will choose to “ ,” by looking back at the distance we have traveled, and looking forward, with a faithful heart, to the on-going work of building our more perfect union.
