Review: In the documentary 'Judy Blume Forever,' the author of 'Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret' and other young-adult classics reflects on her life and taboo-busting career
that the much-loved, much-banned Judy Blume has corrupted several decades of impressionable youth, “Judy Blume Forever” is probably not the film for you—it’s a salute, celebration and round of applause all rolled into one. But in exploring her life and books and their interconnections, the documentary “Judy Blume Forever” makes a point few will miss: Ms. Blume’s own mother never talked to her about any of the ticklish things young people find important.
The results—among them “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” which will be released in a big-screen adaptation later this month—have made Ms. Blume one of the more successful and controversial authors of young-adult fiction of the past 50 years, and, for some, a source of solace: Yale University’s collection of correspondence between Ms. Blume and her fans reveals a relationship between writer and reader that has been, in some cases, close to therapeutic.
