, I should be coolly detached from televised royal intrigues and sagas. And I was, until a friend made me watch the start of series three – and I got hooked. It is engaging, compelling drama and also, vitally, exposes our creaking system of inherited privileges, archaic rules and rituals.
Each series brings forth royalist wailers and whiners. This time, the pathetic acolytes have declared war on the multiple award-winning creator, Peter Morgan . Royal historian Andrew Lowniethe Diana bits “go too far” and fears viewers will be duped into thinking Morgan is divulging the “gospel truth”. Another Windsor worshipper seriously claims that the “vicious” plotlines “would have destroyed the Queen”.
An unnamed friend of the Queen is “horrified” that this is being broadcast so soon after her funeral. William Shawcross, the Queen Mother’s official biographer, apoplectically accuses Morgan of causing harm to the Queen and King Charles. Dames Eileen Atkins, Harriet Walter, Janet Suzman and Jemima Khan, Morgan’s ex- lover, have joined the censorious chorus. Sir John Major calls the drama a “barrel load of malicious nonsense”.
Netflix will now put “fictionalized drama” on their trailer and online synopsis. Not enough for Lownie. I suspect he wants to erase the whole project because, in his words, “It has changed attitudes to the monarchy. Some people say it has humanised them but it may also have undermined respect for them.”Big questions arise out of this pile of defensiveness and irrational fury.
Royal books are penned, mostly by authors with connections to unnamed insiders and courtiers. So when Lownie writes: “I as a biographer have to corroborate my stuff, I can’t just write anything I want or make it up,” we are entitled to ask who and how reliable they are and what their motives are. I think chosen players are brought into the fold. They help the palace to hide the dark sides of the Windsor story.
