Judge Postpones Auction Of Judy Garland’s ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Dress Over Ownership Dispute

Last month, The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., announced it wasto raise money for its drama department, whose previous chair—Rev. Gilbert Hartke—was gifted the dress by actress Mercedes McCambridge in 1973.

However, Hartke’s niece Barbara Hartke, who is the heir to his estate, filed a lawsuit against the university and auction house Bonhams earlier this month, claiming that she is thebecause McCambridge “specifically and publicly” gave the dress to Hartke, not the university. Catholic University maintains it is the rightful owner of the costume and has every right to sell it, tellingthat as a priest and member of the Dominican Order, Hartke had taken a vow of poverty not to receive or accept any gifts as his own personal property.

The university believes its plan to use the proceeds to endow a faculty position in the Rome School of Music, Drama and Art “is in line with Mercedes McCambridge’s original intent and Father Gilbert Hartke's desire to support and grow the University’s drama program,” a representative toldThe dress is one of only two existing dresses worn by Garland during filming that is still paired with a matching white blouse, according to Bonhams auction house, which says photo-matching shows Garland...
