A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction against a rule change by the Trump administration that would have imposed stricter work requirements on some people who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps.Portland Press Herald/Portland Press Herald via Getty

In a ruling issued Friday evening in Washington, D.C., U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell called the rule change capricious, arbitrary and likely unlawful. Critics have called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to suspend implementation of the new rule, especially in light of the economic crisis spurred by the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this week, Agriculture Secretary Sonny PerdueIn her ruling, Howell cited concerns raised by the spread of coronavirus and its effect on the most vulnerable Americans.
