Breaking: Joy for Lancashire as Liverpool to host Eurovision 2023 on behalf of Ukraine
Twenty UK locations initially expressed an interest, and they were narrowed down to just two - Glasgow and Liverpool. The chosen city was announced on tonight's One Show on BBC1.
The UK has hosted Eurovision eight times in the past, most recently in Birmingham in 1998. But the contest has never been to Liverpool or Glasgow. It's good news for Lancashire residents interested in attending the event, since it's just mere miles from our own county.Both are Unesco cities of music, and the chosen location will attract thousands of visitors and be in the global spotlight, with around 160 million TV viewers around the world watching this year's show live.
Liverpool singer Sonia, who came second in Eurovision in 1993, was part of the team which welcomed the news on tonight's show. Liverpool's leaders have said they will host the event "on behalf of Ukraine".
