Joshimath town has been declared 'disaster prone' after more than 600 houses developed large cracks.
The problem of subsidence goes back decades - in 1976, a government committee hadin Joshimath after residents complained of cracks in their houses. In its report, the panel had also warned against allowing heavy construction work in the area.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister's Office said that federal agencies were working with the Uttarakhand government to deal with the situation and ensure the safety of residents. In October, the BBC's Vineet Khare had visited Joshimath and spoke to several residents who were living in fear.
