Jon Stewarts recent comments on ways to stop climate change have sparked backlash.
in which Stewart implies that the best way to stop climate change is to play nice with oil companies, in the hope that they might be convinced to cook the planet a little slower, has infuriated online commentators.
The segment is 7 minutes long and is dull to sit through, peppered with damp one-liners and corporate jargon, but Stewart’s position can be summarised by his “common sense” question: “100 of these [fossil fuel] companies make 70 percent of our global emissions. Wouldn’t it be better to hold our noses, to not villainize them, to understand that no industry is ever going to cut its own throat and take away its profits?”
One of the attendees in the segment is Katherine Dixon, former VP of Strategy for Energy Transition at Shell. Unsurprisingly, Dixon agrees that being “combative” with fossil fuel companies is a bad strategy, and that activists need to focus more on “cooperation.” Another guest in the episode was Shell CEO Ben van Beurden, whose talking points went mostly unchallenged by Stewart., especially for children and young adults - for good reason! The Netflix filmsatirised society’s stubborn determination to ignore the problem, but satire, it seems, can’t compete with Jon Stewart's limp centrism.
