Horror director John Carpenter gives his thoughts on whether MichaelMyers will return in another movie after HalloweenEnds.
John Carpenter reveals his thoughts on whether the Halloween franchise will continue after Halloween Ends. Halloween is one of the longest ongoing horror franchises, spanning 13 films since 1978. After the critical praise of David Gordon Green's reboot, which retconned all other Halloween movies except for the original, was a box office success and did well with critics, Universal announced Halloween Kills would release in 2020, and Halloween Ends in 2022.
Halloween Kills wasn't as well-received as its predecessor and didn't make nearly as much at the box office, which is partly due to the dual release on Peacock. Not much has been seen of the sequel just yet since Halloween Ends just started filming last month, yet the movie is confirmed to have a four-year time jump after Karen's death at the end of Halloween Kills.
Let me explain the movie business to you: if you take a dollar sign and attach it to anything, there will be somebody who wants to do a sequel. It will live. If the dollar sign is not big enough, no matter what, it will not live. I don't know, man. I don't know. This time, I do not know. They really want to end. They're going to shut it off, end it. It's what David has in mind. That's fine.
Green has remained consistent in his answer regarding Halloween's future, saying Halloween Ends will be his last movie in the franchise. Producer Jason Blum however has given a slightly more optimistic answer. While Blum states there are currently no plans to make another sequel after Halloween Ends, he would be thrilled if the franchise continued.
Since Halloween is such a valuable piece of IP for Universal, it is unlikely that Halloween Ends will truly be the end for Michael Myers. The horror movies bring in too much profit for the studio to just abandon the character, so the return of the boogeyman seems inevitable. However, if Halloween Ends is as criticized as Halloween Kills, it could be a while until Universal makes another reboot.
