Joey Logano wins Phoenix, NASCAR championship in dominant fashion.
Over the past three months, a chaotic series of NASCAR Playoff eliminations has left major contender after major contender on the sidelines. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick did not make it out of the Round of 16. Kyle Larson was eliminated in the Round of 12. Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin were eliminated just last week, with Hamlin taken out of contention by Ross Chastain's miracle wall ride on the final corner of the race.
Logano seemed to be in control of the battle when Michael McDowell crashed into Alex Bowman to bring out the day's final caution. On the cycle of additional stops for tires that followed, Bell's tire changer. The team finished an uncharacteristically slow stop at nearly 20 seconds, plunging the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing car out of contention.
Chase Briscoe led the final re-start, but Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney quickly moved past to run 1-2 on track. Ross Chastain moved all the way up to third and closed the lead to under 2 seconds, but he never go to Blaney or Logano's bumper and would have to settle for a career-high championship finish of second as Blaney chose to exercise patience while his teammate Logano took his second career championship with a finale race win.
Christopher Bell recovered to come home tenth, good for third in the driver's championship. Chase Elliott, who spun on a mid-race restart after contact with fellow contender Ross Chastain, was off the pace for the remainder of the day and came home 28th, fourth in the driver's standings. Kyle Larson, whohad a chance to win an owner's championship two rounds after being eliminated from the driver's championship, came home ninth.
After 38 races in 40 weekends, with just one singular off-weekend after the Daytona 500, NASCAR has finally entered its short offseason. Next year's schedule is similarly packed, but teams at least no longer have to worry about the massive additional workload of many offseason tests to develop the Next Gen car. NASCAR gets back to racing at the second annual Clash at the LA Coliseum on February 5th of next year, then begins its season-long championship with the Daytona 500 on February 19th.
