Joel Piroe scored his first goal in five games for Leeds United on Saturday in the 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle
Joel Piroe probably needed a goal on Saturday afternoon for his sake more than anything else. The striker had drawn a blank in six of Leeds United’s last seven game prior to the home clash with Plymouth Argyle and while his place in Daniel Farke’s plans wasn’t at threat, his role was being questioned by some.
That performance came after failing to get in on the act against Huddersfield Town at Elland Road at the end of October. Piroe did see more of the ball for Leeds in what was a dominant showing against their West Yorkshire rivals and he picked up an assist, giving the ball to Crysencio Summerville, who did the rest from inside the penalty box.
Piroe managed to get 48 touches of the ball against the Pilgrims, up from the 23 he managed versus Leicester City, while his 32 accurate passes represent a huge improvement on the 10 he mustered the week previous. His stats also show his willingness to get stuck in more against Plymouth, managing three tackles and an interception and considering he made just one challenge against the Foxes, that’s a jump.
He then showed a burst of pace with an overlapping run to provide a passing option for his countryman before slotting the ball under Michael Cooper in the Plymouth net with aplomb. It was a moment that proved to be decisive given Leeds conceded late in the contest, but it will also do Piroe a world of good as Leeds head into a festive period that promises to push Farke’s group to its very limits.
