The 40th anniversary is upon us, but he still remembers thinking he 'screwed it up.'
After rendering five laterals and a stunning musical cameo as “the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending, exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football,” Cal football broadcaster Joe Starkey had one thought on his mind:The call — most famously punctuated by Starkey's shocked realization that"The band is out on the field!" — is now nearly as iconic as The Play itself.
That part, he was right about. It's a play so bizarre it's just"The Play." Last year, ESPN called it theever. Saturday's Cal-Stanford matchup marks its 40th anniversary; it will be Starkey's final Big Game in the booth after 48 years as Cal's radio play-by-play announcer. After getting flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, the Cardinal squib-kicked to the Golden Bears, and then chaos broke out. Cal, with the help of five laterals and a display of elusiveness, made it to the end zone, surrounded by Stanford. The Stanford band, that is.
