Spanning 500 acres, Joaquin Miller Park attracts nature and art lovers, hikers and bikers, picnickers and even couples wanting to tie the knot. Here's why.
My family and I are lucky to live close to Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park, the city's 'jewel in the redwoods.' The urban park is home to second- and third-growth redwood groves, oak forests, expansive meadows and a network of creek beds. Roughly the size of Disneyland, Joaquin Miller spans 500 acres.
Most trails are single track and bikers must share them with hikers and dogs. The Sunset Trail and aforementioned Sequoia Bayview Trail are great for beginners. But there are also plenty of challenges for even the most experienced mountain bikers — including the rocky terrain of the Big Trees Trail, hardcore downhill stretches on the Chaparral Trail, and the lush, almost jungle-like atmosphere of the Sinawik Trail.
