J K Rowling and Bernardine Evaristo led tributes by a shocked literary world to the “massive talent” ofThomas Cromwell series recreated the Tudor court of Henry VIII,Acclaimed by many as the best British writer of her generation, Mantel won the Booker for both the best-sellingHarry Potter author Rowling simply said “We’ve lost a genius” as she paid tribute to the late author.
Huge sales followed its popular Booker Prize win. Mantel repeated the trick with 2012 sequel Bring Up The Bodies. The novels were turned into a six-part BBC TV series starring Sir Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell also adapted for the stage, along with the final novel in the trilogy, The Mirror and the Light.Giving Up The Ghost
“Whether for television with Wolf Hall, or on radio with her novels and The Reith Lectures, it was always a privilege to work with her. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this incredibly sad time.” Author and screenwriter Emma Kennedy hailed Dame Hilary a “phenomenal writer”, adding: “Eternal gifts that will be read for the rest of time.”
