One reporter once called Hague — who had part-time gigs for a number of media outlets — “the hardest working sportswriter in New Jersey.”

And it better be interesting. “The Big Guy” most definitely would have demanded that, as well.

One reporter once called Hague — who had part-time gigs for a number of media outlets and was the public address announcer for college games — “the hardest working sportswriter in New Jersey.” Mets’ manager Buck Showalter once affectionately called him “a human eclipse.”At 6-foot-8 and — and upwards of 400 pounds before weight-loss surgery — Hague was larger than life, literally and figuratively.

Hague reveled in painting a word picture and taking his time in revealing the story behind the story in many of his lengthy profiles. “You’d always walk away with a smile. Jim had a heart and a love for his career as big as his stature and truly cared about the people he covered and those in the Hudson County community who read his stories.”“He had his strong opinions, but he had a heart of gold. … I was teasing Jim about how confident he always was about statistics, sports names and events. I said that even if he was wrong about something, he was so confident that he could convince me and most people that he was right.

“The Dispatch was his pride and joy. It was his favorite job,” said his wife, Hudson County Superior Court Judge Mary Costello-Hague. “We were attached at the hip … lifelong friends,” Hurley said. “I knew Jimmy since I was running a summer basketball league in Greenville at St. Paul’s parish and he was in the fourth or fifth grade running the scorer’s table for me. The sad and ironic thing is that Jimmy would call me when a mutual friend passed away. We would talk every week or two weeks about something in the sports world.”
