Astros owner Jim Crane says there's no timeline for hiring a GM
Astros owner Jim Crane joked that he was scanning the crowd at Wednesday night's Houston Sports Awards for potential GM candidates.Seventy-four days after he parted ways with James Click, and with less than three weeks until pitchers and catchers report to spring training, Astros owner Jim Crane said there is “not really” a timeline to hire a new general manager.
The prolonged process has produced at least four external candidates, three of whom have never run a baseball operations department. Executives associated with other teams have wondered how much autonomy Houston’s new general manager will wield, especially after a winter when Crane and influential team adviser Jeff Bagwell engineered most of the Astros' consequential moves.
Crane did not confirm any of the aforementioned candidates but did say he has not asked the Milwaukee Brewers for permission to interview David Stearns. Stearns, a longtime Astros assistant general manager under Jeff Luhnow, resigned as the Brewers’ president of baseball operations in October. He still has a year remaining on his contract, meaning any team wishing to interview him must receive permission from Milwaukee’s ownership.
Bagwell said in December he has no interest in being Houston’s general manager and would not interview for the job if asked. Whoever Crane chooses will inherit a World Series-ready roster, much like Click did in 2020, but without the sign-stealing penalties that hovered over Click’s first two seasons.
