Jessica Chastain reflects on being left off the poster of Zero Dark Thirty, the film in which she played the main character Maya. 'It wasn't marketed that way at all...'
Jessica Chastain speaks out against the marketing of her 2012 movie Zero Dark Thirty, which left her off the movie posters despite being the main character. Arguably one of the best actors of her generation, Chastain's career has been on a roll as demonstrated by her Oscar win this year for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Her latest film, The Good Nurse, was released on Netflix on October 26 and her miniseries George & Tammy will premiere on Showtime on December 4.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with C Magazine, Chastain pushed back against the idea that Zero Dark Thirty was marketed with and for women at the center, pointing out that she wasn’t on posters to advertise the film.
How Chastain Supports Other Women in Hollywood Zero Dark Thirty followed the fact-based story of the US hunt for Osama bin Laden and his eventual assassination. The film was met with critical acclaim and received five Oscar nominations, earning Chastain her second. While Chastain’s statement might seem like a generalization, there’s a lot of truth to it.
As a producer, Jessica Chastain is no different. She strongly encourages actors to be at the helm of productions to upend industry practices, like those that deem women to be “ornaments” that can be discarded “at a certain age.” Her recently produced The 355 starred female powerhouses Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, Lupita Nyong’o, and Penélope Cruz in addition to herself as the leading superspies.
