Jenson Button shows why smooth is fast.

When you attend any open-wheel race and get up close to the action, it's amazing just how differently a procession of drivers attack a corner. Some take huge amounts of curbing, some take none. Some drivers flick in their car's nose and rely on reflexes and physicality to carry them through a corner , while others take lines so smooth and delicate, they remind you of a pinstriper laying paint along a fender.

Jenson Button drove just like that last example, renowned as one of the smoothest Formula 1 drivers to ever zip up a Nomex suit.

The key Button's success was an exceptionally smooth pair of hands. His steady, measured steering inputs loaded the tires in an even, progressive manner at corner entry, often preserving his tires long after his competitors had burned through a set.

We get that tire preservation isn't nearly as sexy as grabbing the car by its throat and tossing it into the ring for a brawl, but you can't argue with success. Just count the titles accumulated by some of the smoothest drivers of all time, legends like Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, and Jenson Button. While there are indeed an infinite number of ways to snake through a corner, some champions just do it more artfully than others.

The only member of staff to flip a grain truck on its roof, Kyle Kinard is R&T's senior editor and resident malcontent.
