By contrast to Coolidge, Yeoh definitely works out, when the orchestra threatened to cut her speech short at the Golden Globes thrash, she quipped, “Shut up, I can beat you up”. And who can blame her, when a woman has fought so long and so hard to have her moment in the spotlight, the least folk should do is let her speak. In her own words, she’s spent “forty years, not letting go of this”.
Yeoh and Coolidge are both fighters in their own distinct ways. In an industry which is ugly with racism and ageism, they have both triumphed, although Yeoh still has to contend with a mother who watched the movie and enquired, “why do you look so old?” Ha, mothers! Meanwhile, the rest of world is finally moving on.
Some of us are thin some of us are flabby . Regardless of weight or wrinkles, what we don’t want to do is to stand down, to disappear, we still want to be counted. I’m as ambitious as I was 40 years ago and just as jealous and angry when I don’t get the jobs I think I’m worthy of.I think the difference now, is that women in their sixties are being more honest about chasing what we still want and given the opportunities, we are snatching the ball and running – or not, as in Coolidge’s case.
