Japan’s Lily MedTech is creating a powerful new tool to fight breast cancer Sponsored by JapanGov
Lily MedTech was spun off from the University of Tokyo four years ago. It has been developing a new ultrasound imaging system for breast cancer that is not only more comfortable than traditional mammograms using X-rays, it may be more accurate with young women and those with dense breast tissue. Denser breasts can make cancer screening more complex and increase the risk of developing cancer.
“With mammography, there’s a risk of radiation as well as pressure and pain. That’s not the case with ultrasound, which can also detect things that mammography cannot,” says Lily MedTech CTO and cofounder Azuma Takashi. “Breast cancer is curable with early detection, but there are still many reasons that keep women from getting checked, including pain and psychological issues. We want to lower these hurdles and improve screening precision.
, researchers assigned some 73,000 women to undergo mammography alone or mammography with ultrasound, and found that the latter approach increased sensitivity and the detection rate for early cancers. Azuma has a background in applied physics and worked as an ultrasound scientist for a major Japanese manufacturer. As a professor in the University of Tokyo’s Department of Medicine and Bioengineering, he conducted research into ultrasound imaging.
Lily MedTech is developing its latest prototype of the ultrasound system with four partners including the University of Tokyo Hospital, Showa University Hospital and Shonan Memorial Hospital. They have performed about 200 clinical tests with patients, and follow-up surveys by Lily MedTech found that about 97% said the ultrasound system is more comfortable than mammography.
