Benn played just 8:38 at even-strength, as he picked up 2:34 on the top power play unit, and another eight seconds on the penalty kill.
During the preseason, DeBoer did not use Benn on the penalty kill, and said Saturday morning that he’d like to keep Benn and veteran Joe Pavelski away from PK duties. “When you look at the big picture of 82 games and hopefully a long playoff run, the age and the way that those guys play the game, I don’t think it’s realistic that those guys are going to play every situation, 18, 19, 20 minutes a night and still be able to give us what they need, and do what they do best,” DeBoer said. “Let’s be honest, we need offense, those two guys have to bring some offense for us.
DeBoer added that the Stars still might have to utilize Benn while shorthanded at times this season, but “keeping those minutes in mind.”“I’m excited,” DeBoer said. “I’ve come in here for years as a visiting coach and always loved the atmosphere and the fans. This isn’t one of those quiet full rinks. This is a loud full rink. I’m just excited to get here and get through it. I’m excited to get it over with and get moving on the rest of the season.
It will be DeBoer’s first time behind an American Airlines Center bench since his visiting Vegas team lost in a shootout last year.
