'Jeopardy!' champion James Holzhauer's rematch against rival Emma Boettcher appears to be a success so far, after besting his opponent by nearly $23,000 on the first of two games in the final round of 2019's Tournament of Champions.
Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler from Las Vegas, Nevada, finished the episode with $49,326, about $23,000 more than his closest rival Emma Boettcher, who ended on $26,400. Francois Barcomb landed in a distant third place with $1,800.
Boettcher was the player that ended Holzhauer's record-breaking run on his 33rd consecutive appearance in June. Fans of the show have beena possible rematch between the rivals since it was announced they would both be participating in the tournament, and their wish came true Thursday night. Although Holzhauer appears to have a firm lead, his victory is anything but certain as the winner of theis determined by combining the total of two games, the second of which is set for Friday.
The winner of the Tournament of Champions will be earning more than just bragging rights, with $250,000 at stake. The second-place contestant will receive $100,000, while the person left in third place will take home $50,000.run earlier in the year, by employing an aggressive strategy which often saw him finding Daily Double clues earlier than usual and wagering large amounts.
