With Dawuane Smoot out for the season, the Jaguars' defensive front faces a new challenge to its depth for the finishing stretch. Here's what it means.
Smoot is in the final year of a two-year deal he signed shortly following the 2020 season with Jacksonville. He will become an unrestricted free agent in March of next year barring a contract extension or franchise tag.
Smoot is tied for the team lead in sacks this season with Josh Allen and has accounted for 22.5 sacks in six years with Jacksonville since being selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.The Jaguars have utilized outside linebacker/defensive lineman Arden Key in place of Walker's presence on the defensive line the past couple of weeks. Now, Key will likely transition to Smoot's role over the last few weeks of the year.
Both players will be pivotal to provide the depth that's been impacted due to Smoot's absence. For context, Smoot has played 44 percent of the team's defensive snaps this year. Allen has 15 hurries, according to Pro Football Reference, the most in his career. He's also played the most snaps in his career with 780 defensive snaps this season. His previous high came in 2021 when he played 769 snaps through 16 games played.
