Jacksonville State football coach Rich Rodriguez released a statement after commit Philstavious Dowdell was killed in a Dadeville, Alabama, shooting.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Philstavious Dowdell and the other victims of the senseless tragedy last night. He was a great young man with a bright future. My staff and I are heartbroken and hope that everyone will support his family through this difficult time," Rodriguez said in the statement.
Dowdell's grandmother Annette Allen confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser on Sunday that Dowdell had died. He was at a party for his sister's 16th birthday party. Dowdell's mother sustained two gunshot wounds. Her status is unclear.
