Mr. Harlow wasn’t available for comment. But for years he has tackled his doubters in his own music. On “Keep It Light,” from his first studio album, for example, he raps: “All the greats caught all the hate / All the rappers I love most at one point got called a fake.” For Ms. Chesman, Mr. Harlow’s ascent brings up a deeper question about race and hip-hop. “As time progresses and people continue to ask whether or not he is a good rapper, that’s couching the real question, which is whether or not we’re comfortable with a white man assuming such a position,” she says. “That question is bigger than Jack Harlow,” or Mac Miller, or Eminem, she says. “We’re hitting at the core of America.
