🎾 'It's our Wimbledon': How Shrewsbury became home to the UK's biggest little tennis event
From that spark an idea germinated and reaching out to local Shropshire schools to see if their kids wanted to come and have a day at the tennis has become an integral part of the tournament’s growth. Now, their schools day sees around 100 children come through the doors. They run a “Careers in Sport” morning too for secondary school pupils.
And that is crucial because, as Courteen adds, “it’s not a money-making venture – the goal is to break even”. However, the bottom line is that the club is thriving with more than 5,000 members and rather than resentment they see the benefit of bringing in a couple of thousand fans over the week – and it helps that Courteen has found somewhere other than the dance studio for the tournament offices so they don’t have to cancel so many classes.
