The M.E.N's Nicole Wootton-Cane speaks to GMP's Online Child Abuse Investigation Team, who work to bring some of the region's most sickening predators to justice

Snapchat, TikTok, Minecraft, Roblox, Discord - they're just a few of the apps you might find on the home screen of your child's phone or tablet.

"In terms of parental awareness, I think parents are very, very good at protecting their children from contact offences," she added. "Things like you don't go out at night, you have your phone, you let me know what time you're going to be in. All of that is brilliant. For DI Marsden and the team, the priority with any sort of referral is identifying and safeguarding any child in the images - even if they uploaded them themselves - and this is done immediately. "If there's no suggestion of any sort of third party, any sort of blackmail, threats, coercion, and it is literally that the kids have uploaded these images mistakenly or through lack of knowledge of themselves, they're dealt with as a safeguarding issue," she added.

When the team receives a referral where there is suspected third-party involvement, like in any other case, their first priority is to identify and safeguard any victims. Depending on the nature of the abuse, the support package provided will look different from case to case. As technology changes, so does offenders' behaviour. The team are now seeing cases involving Artificial Intelligence , Augmented Reality such as Snapchat filters, and Virtual Reality headsets. These cases pose challenges to investigators from the off, as it can be hard to determine whether a real child is at risk, or if the images are fully computer-generated.
