Experts in Manchester are bracing themselves for the arrival of a super-strength street drug that can be hundreds of times more potent than heroin. Synthetic opioids called nitazenes have been linked to more than 100 deaths across the UK since last summer.
Last month the government classified 15 types of nitazenes as Class A drugs, with the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs warning they are highly addictive and pose a greater risk of overdose. In December it was reported that 30 overdose fatalities in Birmingham were being examined for the involvement of nitazenes and the sedative xylazine, after a coroner concluded nitazenes were the primary cause of death of two drug addicts in one night at a hostel in the city. And earlier this month a warning was issued in East Lancashire after nitazene was found there.
Dr Oliver Sutcliffe, director of Manchester-based drugs testing agency MANDRAKE, said no evidence of nitazenes had been found in any of the samples analysed in Greater Manchester. Michael Linnell, who runs Greater Manchester's Local Drug Information System, said drugs services and the authorities were 'prepared for the worst'. Test strips have been handed out to users who are also being urged to carry overdose reversal drug naloxone."It's not unusual for heroin users to overdose and die. It's not unusual for heroin to be adulterated But it is unusual for it to be adulterated with something that's stronger than the heroin itself.
