Following clashes with Mayor de Blasio over citywide protests and reports of police misconduct, sources say the police commissioner and chief of department could both be headed for the door

the officer from the 73rd precinct who was recorded pushing Queens residentto the ground during a protest, will be arrested and charged with assault. Sources say Shea told de Blasio that D’Andraia should not be charged, and, these people say, the mayor subsequently asked for Shea’s resignation. Monahan is expected by many to follow if Shea goes.

“We’re figuring shortly after the arrest is made, [Shea will resign],” one officer told me. “We were told the mayor wants the cop arrested, and they refused to do it. It was a resign-or-be-fired situation.” One officer said that D’Andraia is required to turn himself in by Tuesday. Another noted that Monahan, too, had clashed with de Blasio: “Heard from guys on Mayor detail…Monahan got into an argument with the mayor and called him a piece of shit and told him to go fuck himself.

Not knowing whether Shea will continue in his position has created a sense of chaos in the ranks, according to an officer. “We’re being pushed to 12-hour tours. Not knowing if we’re going to have our days off. We know if anything happens we won’t be backed by the job or the city…. The mayor already stated he wants to pull funding from us,” he said. The fallout from Shea’s departure, said one officer, would be significant. “We’re going to protect ourselves.

As he flounders, caught between the two sides, de Blasio’s legacy is all but assured. Over the weekend, in massive protests unencumbered by the mayor’s 8 p.m. curfew, chants of “Hey-hey, ho-ho, de Blasio has got to go!”
