Dylan Painter tried to put his college basketball career in perspective Tuesday, and it didn’t take him long to figure out just how to frame it.“I’ve really had two, unique basketball careers,” the 6-foot-10, 235-pound former Hershey and current Delaware Blue Hens center said.
But, after two seasons seeing limited reserve minutes, he left his one-time dream school for Delaware, where he is averaging 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. Especially so because if he hopes to see his college career continue, Painter has to help the 15th-seeded Blue Hens find a way to knock off the second-seeded Wildcats.Have teammates and coaches picked his brain a little about the Villanova program? Sure, Painter said Tuesday, but not a ton. Instead, he said, for Delaware to be successful, the team has to focus on itself.
Delaware does come into this tournament with some unique momentum. Painter said the Blue Hens’ three-game losing streak to end the regular season was a “low-point.” Despite that, somehow, as a fifth-seed they rebounded to win the CAA tournament and earn this opportunity. So, maybe there is sort of the sense that they are playing with house money because, Painter said, there’s a bit of a “why not us,” vibe to this team.
