The Issa Foundation states the cemetery is needed to fulfil the need for Muslim burial space, but it will welcome people of all faiths and no faith
The Issa Foundation have announced an engagement event to unveil redesigned plans for a new cemetery between Oswaldtwistle and Blackburn. The event focuses on plans for The Memorial Garden and Cemetery located off Blackburn Road.
The billionaire Issa brothers initially submitted a planning application to hyndburn-council>Hyndburn Council for 35,000 burial plots in the area in November 2021, spanning 84 acres. An action group was formed and a ‘Stop the Accrington/Oswaldtwistle Cemetery’ petition to the council on change.org reached more than 3,000 signatures.
Leader of the Council, Marlene Haworth, said at the time that there was ‘no immediate desperate situation’ for a cemetery and that Hyndburn has enough spaces with its three cemeteries. She also raised concerns about the location of the proposed cemetery citing concerns over speeding on Blackburn Road.
However, the cemetery will welcome people of all faiths and no faith. Other areas will also be opened up for public use. There will be a ‘wide-ranging burial facilities providing washing, shrouding, coffins, burial, and backfilling tasks’ and ‘provision of family support to help with bereavement’.
