A United Nations 20-truck convoy which arrived through the Rafah border in Egypt included food, water and medicine
Egyptian aid workers celebrate as an aid truck crosses back into Egypt through the Rafah border crossing after transporting supplies to Gaza first humanitarian aid convoy arrived in Gaza on Saturday
Meanwhile, Israel’s military spokesman told how the country is planning to step up its attacks on the Gaza Strip from today to prepare for the next stages of its war with Hamas. In a statement UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said he was confident the delivery would be the start of a “sustainable effort” to deliver supplies to Gaza, adding: “The humanitarian situation in Gaza – already precarious – has reached catastrophic levels.”
Israel has said it will allow no aid to enter from its territory until Hamas releases the hostages it took during its attack, but it has allowed aid to enter through Egypt, as long as it does not end up in the hands of Hamas.Western nations are also pushing to evacuate foreign passport holders from Gaza, and the US Embassy in Israel said any border opening on Saturday could enable foreigners to leave the territory – but it is still unclear when or if they will be allowed to leave.
Israel kept up heavy bombardment of targets throughout Gaza overnight on Saturday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “fight until victory”.
