Israel and militants blame each other for an explosion at a hospital compound in Gaza that Palestinian officials say killed hundreds shortly before President Biden's visit to Israel.

President Biden, in his roughly 15 minute Oval Office address Thursday, connected the success of both Israel and Ukraine to U.S. interests, saying they are “vital for America’s national security.' Biden said he is poised to ask Congress to approve billions of dollars in military assistance for both overseas conflicts.

The request is expected to include at least $10 billion for Israel, which Biden described as an “unprecedented commitment” to the country’s security, and roughly $60 billion in assistance to Ukraine, countries in the Indo-Pacific region and border security. If the U.S. steps back from its global leadership role, “conflict and chaos could spread in other parts of the world,” Biden said.
