The Israeli military said its airstrikes in Gaza killed a Hamas commander who led one of last weekend’s massacres of civilians. The region is bracing for Israeli forces to launch a ground offensive.
The United Nations says that more than a million people, almost half the total population of Gaza, have been displaced since the Israel began a campaign of airstrikes on the enclave following the assault on southern Israel by Hamas. An Israeli demand that those living in northern Gaza evacuate has pushed many people south toward the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, a frontier that has become a focal point for those hoping to leave the enclave and for aid trying to get in.
Why has the border crossing remained closed? Egypt has been pushing for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Gaza Strip, but Egyptian officials said a deal to open the crossing has been held up by concerns that Israel hadn’t given assurances it would pause airstrikes and by Israeli insistence that trucks entering via Egypt be thoroughly searched. Israel said it was concerned about arms smuggling but wouldn’t target convoys.
